In Your Dreams

Day 38

“Hey, there’s some fruit over here!” Eddie shouted. “Chris, Faith, Tracy!” Two women and a man ran over to him, where there was a group of fruit trees. “Grab as much as you can.” They each got an armful of fruit and walked to the beach. The other three talked amongst each other, but Eddie kept silent.

Suddenly, Eddie heard a door slam shut. He woke up on the couch and saw that Adah had just brought Benji and Joseph home from school.

“Where’d you get that necklace, Janelle?” Eddie asked a girl.

“Larry gave it to me yesterday,” she said. “I hadn’t realized it was Christmas until he mentioned it.”

“I had one just like that in my luggage. It had been my wife’s…” Eddie said.

“Oh,” she gasped. “If it’s yours…” she began to take the necklace off.

“No,” Eddie stopped her. “She’d want it to be used on someone. She was very kind, like that.”

Suddenly, Janelle’s expression turned serious. “Amon, why did you choose to go with Jack?”

“I have my boys to get back to. Now that I know Joseph is alive, I have twice as much reason to get off this island,” Eddie said. “Why’d you go side with Jack?”

“It wasn’t so much going with Jack, as not going with Locke,” Janelle said. “You saw him throw that knife into Naomi’s back, right? He’s crazy.” She paused. “Besides, I need to get back to my family. I have a niece and nephew I’ve never met before.”

“What’re you guys talking about?” a guy asked them. Three men were walking over to them.

“Hey, Dexter. Jeff. George,” Janelle said. “We were talking about why we chose to go with Jack.”

“Personally, I just need to get out of here,” George said. “I need to apologize to my daughter.”

“Daisy isn’t here and a week after Libby got here I asked her about Daisy and none of the dead on the other side of the island looked at all like Daisy. That means that Daisy probably never got on the plane,” Dexter explained. “I need to find her.”

“What about you, Jeff?” Eddie asked. “Why’d you choose Jack over Locke?”

Jeff looked uneasy. Suddenly, Janelle broke in. “What’s Sun doing?” She was looking at a tent and a Korean woman was heading inside of it. “That’s Juliet’s tent.”

Suddenly, Eddie was woken by his blinds being blown back and forth against the window.

Day 44

            “Thanks Charlie,” Eddie said.

“No problem, mate,” a blond guy said, handing Eddie a piece of paper and a pen. Eddie sat down under a tent and began to write:

            Dear Eddie,

I’m safe. Please don’t worry about me, just keep the boys safe. I don’t know what happened to Joseph. I had to get on the plane before he got back from the vending machine. If he ever did get on the plane he was put somewhere else. If you’ve got him, please take care of him… and Benji. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

            Love from your brother,

            J. Amon Jefferson

Eddie sat up in his bed with tears in his eyes. “He doesn’t even know if Joey’s alive,” Eddie sobbed.

Eddie sat down beside a woman in her twenties, on the beach. “You okay, Faith?”

“It’s just what happened at the Barracks,” Faith explained. “I can’t believe it was only two days ago,”

“I don’t really understand why you’d go with Locke in the first place,” Eddie said. “It doesn’t make sense.”

“You don’t know me,” Faith said. “You told the Others many things about us, but I’m sure they never told you what I did.”

“What did you do?” Eddie asked.

Faith took a deep breath. “My boyfriend, Oscar, used me to get close to my professor so that he could murder him. After we got back to our hotel, I knocked Oscar out and called the police. If I ever left the Island, Oscar would hunt me down and kill me for turning him in.”

“That’s a good reason,” Eddie nodded. “Other than you and Howard, I still don’t understand.”

“I know why Jerome chose Locke,” Faith said. “He told me while we were walking to the Barracks. It was because the Barracks had a security system. In his words, better safe than sorry.”

“There’s irony,” Eddie said. “You weren’t safe and you’re definitely sorry.”

“I know…” Faith said. “After seeing those guys at the Barracks, I’d be willing to face even Oscar… that’s why I’m getting out of here, first chance I get.”

Eddie woke up suddenly. “Eddie,” Adah said, noticing that he was awake. “What happened?”

“He’s okay,” Eddie said. “But for how long?”
